“I’ll take a rum and Pepsi..” I sometimes wonder if this is how PepsiCo employees order my easy, go-to drink. Since I don’t typically venture out from a few, standard drink options, I thought I’d use part of my weekend to see what other more adventurous alcohol drinkers might try. After all, it’s not just personal style that can get stuck in a rut.
In Texas, alcohol sales are governed differently than my home state of Iowa. Designated, private retailers sell alcohol during set hours, though beer/wine is often available in grocery stores. For me, this meant an extra endeavor through the giant alcohol and wine retailer: Total Wine. I was interested to see just what an alcohol store the size of a walmart had to offer.
Inside were more types and varieties of alcohols than I will ever know. I made my way to the rum section and flagged down an associate. As someone who tends to order a standard captain coke, I asked him if he had alternate suggestions. He pointed me in the direction of George Ocean. The company is locally operated, out of Dallas, and said to be a top staff pick in the store for rum. SOLD!
Saturday evening, I made a small glass and tried a few sips. For anyone looking to up their rum game, I would definitely recommend it. The blend of spices gave it a smooth and sweet taste, and I’ve even since broken it out for some business meetings among avid rum drinkers, where it still got their high seal of approval.
